Stop 10- The Reference Area
Reference books are located to the left of the stairs beyond the rows of computers.
- Many of the reference books are multiple volume sets such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, or yearly publications such as almanacs or directories. They provide information in relatively short articles or tables that can be easily copied.
- Like the books in the stacks, reference books are arranged by their main subjects using the Library of Congress call numbering system.
- Reference books might cover ALL subjects as in Encyclopedia Britannica, or The World Book or cover a broad subject area such as religion, history or science. We also have encyclopedias of narrower subjects as in the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes or the Encyclopedia of the Cat.
- In recent years we have been adding online reference materials such as encyclopedias or collections of encyclopedias to our online databases and we expect to continue this trend.
Try it: Click to open the Library Catalog and find the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes. You can search by looking for keywords only in the title, author or subject parts of the information. Type the title exactly as shown and click the title button. Then answer the quiz question.
