EBooks (Electronic Books)
What are ebooks? Ebooks, short for "electronic books," are the full text of books available in an online form. Libraries make ebooks available to users through their Web-based catalogs with links into ebook databases. All ebooks in our catalog are recently published books still under copyright. Online access is purchased and made available to our students though a database called NetLibrary.
On-campus access: On campus users can read ebooks for as long as they remain active in the NetLibrary database. Inactivity for 20 minutes in the database will cause ebooks to be released for others to access. Users can view a specific ebook as many times as they can access it.
Off-campus access: Before users can view an ebook off campus they will have to login to their NetLibrary accounts, a free service to our students and staff. After logging into the NetLibrary account, the same access rules apply. See above. To create a NetLibrary account, follow these steps:
Step 1.Click the NetLibrary link below, step 3, after reading steps 1 and 2. After clicking the link below, off-campus users need to supply their MyLSC-O username/password to get into the NetLibrary home page. On-campus users will not be asked for a username/password in order to create their accounts.
Step 2. At the NetLibrary home page, look for the link "Create a Free Account" in the upper right corner of the screen. Fill in the form provided using the MyLSC-O username/password, if possible. Faculty and staff can use their campus network logins, the same as their MyLSC-O logins. If the MyLSC-O username is already in use by another user, a possibility, add a number or symbol so that it is still close to the MyLSC-O username. Try to keep it simple. Your same password will be fine.
Step 3. Click here to begin using NetLibrary. For more help view a NetLibrary tutorial.
Finding and using ebooks: Our students can locate ebooks in two ways:
1. Search in the library catalog. We have a large number of ebooks listed in the catalog. They appear as search results mixed with our traditional printed books. The word "Online" appears after the call numbers of ebooks. Clicking on "URL" for a catalog item brings users to the specific ebook in the NetLibrary database.
2. Search directly in the NetLibrary database. Links are available in the A-Z database list under N or in each list by academic subjects. Search for ebooks by keywords, author or title as you would in our online catalog. View and read ebooks, keyword search within the ebook and print pages one at a time.
