Suggestions for Finding Library Materials for LSC-O Courses

Several online services are helpful for selecting books and other materials for library collections. Most of the publisher catalogs are now online as well. Logins are not needed if on campus but when off campus you will be prompted for your network logins. These services are:

  • Books in Print is a database of all books available for ordering.
  • WorldCat is a library catalog database showing the holdings of all major libraries, usually the larger academic and public libraries worldwide. Use WorldCat to see what new books and other materials (videos, audiobooks, ebooks, etc.) are in each subject area.
  • Academic Search Complete provides periodical publications providing book reviews. Search for these articles using the phrase "Books reviews and ... " insert another word or phrase, such as title keywords or subject keywords.
  • Lexis-Nexis provides book reviews from newspapers such as the New York Times Book Review or Publishers Weekly.
  • Amazon.com is a good resource for some types of library materials and it is freely available on the Web.
  • Tell us what kinds of materials you need for the library to add. We will search our aquisitions database (Baker and Taylor) and vendor catalogs for you and send a list of available items for your approval. Give us a call or e-mail your librarian liaison.
