The Ron E. Lewis Library
The library collections and services are provided in a 44,000-square foot facility completed in June 2001. The library provides access to 39,000 print volumes represented by approximately 30,000 titles. Library users have access to 35,962 unique periodical titles in 49 databases in addition to those in print format. For a complete list of periodicals by subject or specific title, click the Periodical List button on our library web pages. The Periodical List can also be used as a full-text finder when a specific article is needed. For information about accessing and using e-books while off campus, please read our page E-books or Electronic Books.
The Learning Center
The Learning Center is located in room 113 across the main foyer from the library and follows the same operating schedule. Computers in this lab provide standard office application software plus additional course-related programs and tutorials in basic math, English, reading and other subjects. Help is available for those needing to edit and revise composition papers, improve math or computer skills, or use of any of the software programs available. Anyone wishing to use this lab must present a current Lamar ID card and follow procedures and policies for accessing these resources. For more information call Tony Barrientos at (409) 882-3935 (ext. 3935) or e-mail The Learning Center.
Audio/Visual (AV) Services
Audio/visual equipment for evening and weekend classes must be scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please report AV equipment in need of repair or service to the library. Data projector requests and problems should be reported to the Computer Center. Media materials (i.e. video or sound recordings) are listed in the catalog and may be located through a title search. The phrase " videorecording and..." (insert a keyword or phrase) will find videos. To schedule audio/visual equipment and media materials for classroom use, please contact Monty Jones at (409) 882-3081 (ext. 3081) or use our online form: AV Service Request Form.
Library Orientations and Information Literacy Instruction
Finding, evaluating and using information are major skills for required lifelong learning. Faculty are encouraged to create class assignments that help students learn these skills. Instruction is available and is tailored to individual assignments. We can come to your classroom or schedule instruction in the library computer lab. Try to schedule instruction close to the date students should begin working on an assignment, and please give the librarians at least a week advance notice. Contact one of these librarians: Mary McCoy, Marilyn Greene, or Aubrey Schubarth at (409) 882-3082 (ext. 3082) to schedule instruction. You may also use our online form: Library Instruction Request Form. The form is delivered to the librarians' e-mail.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
To borrow library materials not available in either the LSC-O or Lamar University libraries, please use the library's Interlibrary Loan service. The service is free except when we must use a library that charges us, but we make every effort to avoid costs to our users. Interlibrary Loan loan periods are determined by the lending library. Contact Kungwha Kim at (409) 882-3080 (ext. 3080) with any questions. For more information about the ILL service, read our Web page entitled Borrowing from other libraries. To make an ILL request, use this form: Interlibrary Loan Request Form.
A collection of special use material is maintained in the reserve office on first floor. Faculty are encouraged to place any special reading materials in support of courses "on reserve." Materials such as special reading assignments or your own personal books or media may be submitted for inclusion in the reserves collection. Also consider requesting reserve status any of our materials ahead of a class assignment. Forward any of these materials and requests to Aubrey Schubarth (409) 882-3953 (ext. 3953), along with any special instructions or use restrictions. Copyright law requires that this material is reviewed and updated annually.
Computers/Copiers/Microforms
The library provides computers in three areas equipped with current application software. A photocopier is available near the elevator on second floor. Copies are 10ยข per page and the machine accepts both coins and bills. A large collection of periodicals on microform is still used occasionally for older materials not available online. Printing is free at library computers and microform machines.
Distance Learning
When planning to deliver your courses online, we can provide you with persistent (non-changing) links to specific articles or e-books available in our databases. These links can be added to your courseware page or to your links in your course page in MyLSC-O. A librarian can be scheduled to help with on-campus orientations. If you have any questions or other ideas about how we might help you, contact Marilyn Greene at (409) 882-3084 (ext. 3084).
Collection Development
Faculty are encouraged to make requests for new library materials. Requests may be made online by using the form: Suggest New Library Purchases. Please read the following set of Web pages for more information about collection development:
